Catch a Falling Star: Living With Alzheimer's
Published in Paperback by Storm Peak Pr (01 September, 1995)
Authors: Betty Baker Spohr and Jean Valens Bullard
Average review score:

Unblinking look at the disease's impact on victim & family
Betty Spohr's frank first-hand observations about a devasting disease help those who follow her solid path as a care giver to her husband.. Her overriding love for her husband powers her to use her considerable creative resources to shepherd him (and herself) as the effects of the disease accellerate. If readers dread plunging into a book about one of the most feared downsides of the increased life span phenomenon, this book has a surprisingly light-handed touch.

Invaluable!
Originally published as "To Hold a Falling Star", I bought a hardcover edition of this book years ago out of sheer curiosity. While I was browsing through the bookstore, this was a featured selection & I flipped through. What interested me the most, at the time, was the format of Betty's book. It is truly a diary, short & sweet, with a drawing accompanying each entry.

Not only is it a touching story, but it is also very educational. It explains the tasks of a caretaker in a way that anyone can understand. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of things to remember---a mix of legal, personal, & spiritual things.

Ironically, shortly after I purchased the book, my grandmother suffered another of many strokes. This one caused her to act as though she had Alzheimer's. Doctors labelled it "dementia" & theorized that it was caused by a dislodged particle of plaque that travelled to her brain.

Although Granny wasn't as progressed as an AD patient, she relied on my parents to care for her from then on & she never recovered. Just like a person with AD, she would be acute in some areas (beating everyone at dominoes) while being completely "not there" in others (not bathing, not eating yet perking up whenever ice cream was around.)

Betty's book helped to serve as a warning of things my parents could expect & ultimately had to deal with at one time or another.

Caught in a Higher Love: Inspring Stories of Women in the Bible
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (July, 1998)
Authors: Carolyn Nabors Baker and Carolyn Nabors Baker
Average review score:

I agree with the reviewer from Franklin
She's right--this is a splendid book. Baker makes the women of the Bible multi-dimensional for me--before they had been cardboard cutouts with whom I could not relate. Now I see them as I see other women around me--what an illuminating book!

Meet a woman who you can relate to
Carolyn Nabors Baker explores women of the Bible unlike any book on the shelves today. Regardless of whether one considers herself a Christian or not, this book is for any woman dealing with everyday life: stress, hope, hurt, love, love lost, etc. There is a woman in this book who you can relate to--someone who went through what you are going through now and made it. As the cover of the books states: "Inspiring Stories of Women in the Bible," this book is just that and more. This book is a must-read, and after you've read it, you'll want to get a copy for your sister, mother, best friend, and maybe even your worst enemy! If you've lost hope, need encouragement, or just need to be inspired, CAUGHT IN A HIGHER LOVE is a great choice......L2D

Celebrate Recovery
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 March, 1998)
Authors: Rick Warren and John Baker
Average review score:

It works because God is the foundation of the book
Celebrate Recovery works because it is a biblicaly backed tool that is written using Gods principles and guidelines for our lives. It is put in a format that is easy to understand and gets to the root of our issues. No matter what your background is drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse, adandoment, anger, over eating, over spending. If your life is out of control, your marriage a mess or you just want more God, Celebrate Recovery can show you how to heal, grow and teach others. It is not just for those that are beyond hope, it is for everyone.

I have been a Christian for 15 years, but still had resentment and habits in my life from learned dsyfunctions that did not allow me the freedom Christ had for me. A little over two years ago I went through an experience that totally devastated me. I would not have tried to take my own life, but everynight for months I would come home and kneel by my bed and pray for Jesus to take me home. I was sick of being here where your heart was ripped out and everyone was always playing games it seemed at your expense. It was at that point that God truly humbled me and started turning my life around. Celebrate Recovery has started me at the begining and is step by step guiding me through what Gods word can and wants to do if we will just apply it to our lives. But most of us do not understand how to do this.

I know it works because it has changed my life. And I see it doing miracles in peoples lives every week. I am now the Celebrate Recovery coordinator in my church. We are a small church of about 100 people, about 40 members, but on Fridays nights there are 12 faitful people that show up and say here we are God, change us. And he is taking this tool that has been given us and healing hurts that have been buried for 10, 20 or more years, he is changing thinking habits and lifestyles that have chained us to our past. It is healing and setting free. Since Sept. 12, 200, we have been meeting and at times I just stand in awe of what I see happening. ANd looke forward to the knowledge that when this class is over after the 52 weeks that there will be 12 ministys that will be laucnhed to touch people in all different needs. It is a tool that not only takes the broken, hurt, addicted and abused form their painful lifestyle, but it develops them so that they can show others.

God had taken me form a life of drugs, abandonment and broken relationships, sexual abuse and things that I never understood

that they were from bad choices, then he showed me that I must be set free from the chains that I had allowed to be placed around me.

God took one broken, messed up woman and is gracious enough to use her to teach this to others, so that they too can be healed and touch others.

This book is a must for everyone that wants a life of freedom found in Christ. If it is not in your church or home it should be.

FREEDOM IN CHRIST...
The purpose of this book is to allow us to become free from life's hurts, hang-ups, and habits. By working through the eight principles of recovery based on the Beatitudes, with Jesus Christ as our Higher Power, we can and will change!

You will experience the true peace and Serenity that you have been seeking. You will no longer need to rely on dysfunctional, compulsive, and addictive behaviors as a temporary fix" for your pain.

Time does not heal all wounds, but time only extends the pain if the problem isn't dealt with. This Book is based on the actual words of Jesus rather than a psychological theory.

I can say this not only because I have the book, but I have been in the celebrate recovey program for the last five months and I am a living testimony, it works!

You will be blessed with a deep peace and a lasting freedom as you walk your own road to recovery and receive a increased stronger relationship with God and others!

God Bless You :)

Chaotic Dynamics : An Introduction
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (September, 1990)
Authors: Gregory L. Baker and Jerry P. Gollub
Average review score:

From the pendulum to chaos in straightforward steps
Books that take you from undergraduate physics to a nontrivial understanding of nonlinear dynamics, chaos and fractals are rare. Chaotic Dynamics does the job ellegantly. The familiar pendulum is used to illustrate the basic techniques and concepts in nonlinear dynamics. The reader is gently introduced to phase diagrams, Poincare sections, basins of attraction and bifurcation diagrams. Computer code is included in the Appendix. The interested reader can use this code to further illustrate the lessons of the text or to embark on his/her own exploration of the pendulum and other dynamical systems. Having used the pendulum to establish a firm conceptual platform, Baker and Gollub progress gracefully into the logistic map to illustrate concepts such as period doubling, Lyapunov exponent, entropy, stretching and folding, and various measures of fractal dimension. The presentation is nicely rounded off with studies of other maps and nonlinear dynamical systems from a range of fields in physics, chemistry and fluid dynamics.

Chaos and True Basic Code
The gateway to experimental chaos research comes through here! The mathematics, the examples and code that illustrates the book is here. It is somewhat narrow in it's beginning approach, but delivers after careful study a beginning of understanding with some real industry. Not for the mathemaically shy or Professors like Ruelle, but for real people wanting real answers! Your unique Associates ID is: thefractaltransl.

Back to the Future
This was a great book I could not put it down. It made me think of what it would be like to go back to the Old West from the 21st Century.Trey and Amanda's reactions to their different worlds keeps the story moving right along.I like to read historical romances and this is one of the best.It makes me want to look for a white horse to show up in my yard. I would highly recommend this book it is a good light summer read, one that helps you to escape from the real world for a while. I give this book 5 stars.

My Favorite Book!
This is my favorite book ever! I love reading Western Romance, historical or contemporary, so this book was right up my alley. Madeline Baker is my favortie author, I have never read a book of her's that I didn't like. This book was very vivid and made me feel like I was there. Read this book, I promise you'll love it!

Child Behavior
Published in Paperback by Harperperennial Library (January, 1992)
Authors: Louis Bates Ames and Sidney Baker
Average review score:

Excellent reference book for parents. Has all the answers.
With four children and seven grandchildren, Gesell Institute's CHILD BEHAVIOR has become our constant reference guide. The book's "Ages and Stages" section was one we always anxiously referred to when one of our children was doing something unusual. It was reassuring to us to find out they were each very normal for their age. In fact, it almost seemed like the particular section had been written after observing what our kids were doing at that specific stage in their development. Today it is not unusual for one of our children to call us with a question they have about their kids. Even though our original copy is over 35 years old, the examples and descriptions still fit. Many things may have changed over the years, but children seem to develop and react similarly to specific situations. Just take one look at our tattered copy and you will see that this has been a well-used reference book in our home and we recommend it to any parent or grandparent.

this book was recommended by my best friend
this book has been 100% on the mark foretelling stages in my niece's development. she is 4 years old now and the book has been her parents best guide. a much better book than the "what to expect" series.

Chord and Progressions for Jazz and Popular Keyboards
Published in Paperback by Music Sales Corp (June, 1983)
Author: Kenneth Baker
Average review score:

'Oh, Give Me A Home Where Progressions Roam'
A 'Guiding Light' to Progressions. This book takes you from basic chord construction to advanced chord structures and progressions with simple illustrations and clearly defined instructions. I highly recommend this book to keyboardists who needs to quickly expand their C&P repertoire. Add this book to your library.

Excellent book on Chord Progression
In this book, Kenneth shows you different kinds of chord progression, mostly leading to the Tonic ( I chord ). He explains the use of all kinds of chords, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, etc. and how these can be applied in your chord progressions. Examples are given and there are just tons of information on how to add 'color' to your progressions. An excellent book.

CMOS Mixed-Signal Circuit Design
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-IEEE Press (May, 2002)
Author: R. Jacob Baker
Average review score:

Best book on mixed-signal circuit design
This is the best book I have found so far on CMOS mixed-signal circuit design. It is not only an excellent textbook for senior or graduate student to learn mixed-signal circuit design but also a "must have" reference book for circuit designers doing analog/mixed-signal design. The book presents not only the therectical background for data converter using SPICE modeling approach, but also the practical considerations for implementing data converters at the circuit level. The materials it covers about submicron CMOS circuit design has provided reader with necessary background and techniques (which are very practical) for transistor level design like no other analog textbook you can find.

An excellent text for learning and for reference!
The book begins by covering basic data converter theory and includes methods for SPICE modeling of data converters. An important aspect to this coverage is that the metrics for evaluating data converters are explained clearly (this makes the book a great reference when wading through some of the spec sheets or journal articles covering data converters).

After the fundamentals of data converters are established, the text covers noise-shaping converters (including a review of some of the digital filtering concepts required to understand/implement these devices). This is one of the hottest topics in solid-state circuit design today, with journal articles appearing monthly on new topologies and uses for sigma-delta data converters. Very few textbooks are available that cover this topic, and it is great to have a book that teaches the noise-shaping concepts in such a straightforward manner.

There are a few chapters that cover implementation of data converters, including a very useful chapter on submicron CMOS circuit design. Rather than simply focus on the academic and 'ideal' implementations of circuitry, this text takes a practical approach and recognizes that the real world is not perfect. This approach is seen throughout the text and gives a deeper appreciation for the specifications used to characterize converter performance, as well as the limitations with various circuit topologies.

In addition to data converters, there is a chapter on integrator-based CMOS filters (this is very applicable in today's mixed-signal CMOS designs), including filters that use the noise-shaping concepts discussed earlier.

Very few technical textbooks are as well thought as this one. From start to finish, the text is filled with practical examples that aid in the learning process. There are SPICE examples throughout the book, and the netlists will all run using WinSPICE (all netlists and WinSPICE are available for download ...). It is great to be able to play with these netlists and get a feel for how the circuits operate.

The final chapter in the book takes the concepts taught and shows real implementations of several circuits (on a breadboard and with hand-soldered circuits), including a noise-shaping modulator and a discrete analog integrator. The author proves that the concepts work with these implementations and discusses proper laboratory measurement and characterization techniques.

This book is a great teaching tool as a classroom text or as a self-study reference. The problems at the end of each chapter and the prototypes at the end of the book allow the reader to verify understanding, whether on paper or in the laboratory.

The Complet Piano Player Book 5
Published in Paperback by Amsco Music (December, 1999)
Author: Kenneth Baker
Average review score:

Great book for the older person who wants to learn piano
After having been a musician in school many years ago, I decided to buy an electronic keyboard and learn to play the piano. Browsing the beginning piano lesson books, I found too many that were too basic (what is a note?) to too advanced. I then stumbled across this gem and decided to buy it. What a great decision!

The early chapters do present some basic music theory which I quickly browsed through. Later chapters though provided me with enough challenge to push me. When the pieces were mastered I moved to the next. I really felt my skills at the keyboard increase.

What makes this book so good are the arrangements. The songs are, for the most part, pieces I know and like and range from traditional to popular to classical. The structure of the arrangements provides a pleasing sound yet aren't terribly difficult to master. Even though I have moved beyond this book, I still return to it on occasion to replay pieces that I really enjoy ("This Nearly Was Mine" still gives me chills when I play it).

I highly recommend this book to the older person who has some musical training, however rusty, and would like to extend it to playing the piano.

Really Wonderful
I think this book is absolutely wonderful. I have been wanting to learn to play the piano, but hven't got a chance to take lessons. This book takes you step by step, from the extreme basics of piano upto a level where you can play some popular songs. It is a must-buy for all aspiring piano players.
